Nikkah-fied

I’ve delayed this piece for nearly 2 months, soaking up my new reality. I’m married now, and I had a fairy tale journey from engagement to Nikkah.

In April this year, I got engaged. We planned for the wedding to be in December and we even picked a date. I had a mendhi artist booked, a makeup artist reserved and even confirmed the date with some family members. Fast forward to August: I go to visit my future in-laws one day. Next thing you know, we’re planning to have the wedding in 2 weeks! My in-laws were so onboard and that made me lowkey excited. Telling my parents was so funny. I was like “So we have some news..You know how the wedding was meant to be in December? Yeah no, we’re getting married in 2 weeks.” Lol. They were super supportive though and also a tad bit emo.

This meant I had to start packing up my bedroom and other belongings. I must say I was super organized in my tasks – it took me 3 days to pack everything I own and have them all organized in order ready to be sent to Durban woohoo! I was much more excited than sad while packing, my mother did not approve but c’mon that’s a good sign. While I packed at home, my fiancé and co were setting up the house in Durban, for the newlyweds hehe. Later in the week I went to Durban to pack all my stuff. That was cool, everything of mine had a place. The apartment was clean and furnished, they put in a lot of effort and it warmed my heart.

The night before the wedding, I had to go to my in-laws house. This was basically my part of the wedding, I needed to give my consent for the marriage and sign the marriage document. I was the shyest girl in this world. I got to the house and barely looked at my fiance. They asked for my consent, I said yes. I signed and that was it. I did this all in front of my fiance who I could not look at. My tummy had butterflies the whole time.

Day of Nikkah: The wedding was at 4pm, so that meant I had enough time to get ready and look all bride-like. I spent my morning eating breakfast, looking at old pics of my fiance and I, listening to music and being all in my feels. I was so excited and time was dragging. My fiance sent me a message every hour counting down to the wedding. I looked at the time and realised I had an hour to get ready. My bride look was simple so it didn’t take me long to ready. My mom gawked over me when I was ready. When we arrived to the house, the men just left for Mosque so my fiance didn’t get to see me. We sat down inside and listened to the nikkah over a speaker. The moment he said yes, I cried. So did his mother, my mother, his aunt and his sister. I couldn’t wait to see him. In the mean time, my in-laws had gifts prepared for me. I didn’t expect much but what I got was breathtaking. Inside the bedroom were 3 long tables. Each table displayed 3 or more gift sets. From candy to 18ct Gold jewelry. It felt like walking into a boutique but everything is mine! I was spoiled rotten. Then, we heard an array of car horns up the road, get closer to the house. I realized he’s back. I sat in the lounge alone, wiping my sweaty hands while everyone was outside. It was noisy, cars hooting, people exclaiming.. my heart was pounding but I couldn’t stop smiling. His sisters locked him outside and demanded cash to see the bride (a tradition). And then finally, we hugged as a married couple, he kept saying “Hi wife”.

They prepared a set up in their garage for dinner. It was coordinated so beautifully. It was everything I loved, so beautiful and yet simple. I was so happy with everything.

My husband and I were waiting to go home ofcourse, but that day couldn’t have been more perfect. The first drive back home as a married couple felt like a breath of fresh air.
