I LOVE a good psychological thriller, which might be my favorite movie genre. I enjoy reading in between the lines, looking for clues, coming up with motives and simply enjoying the suspense. As much as directors try to encompass a mass story within 90 mins plus, they usually leave us with open ended curiosities. A movie will always answer the main question: What’s going on here? But oftentimes, there are minor details which have major significance.
What’s with the green frog?
We’re shown snippets of a green frog maybe twice in the movie. The green frog is what Frida saw the very first time she was on the island. In pursuit of escape previously, Slater caught her dress and let go, where she fell and hit her head on a rock. Her eyes were fixed on a green frog. This indicates that Frida had been on the island before.
What’s with “red rabbit”?
The housekeeper calls Frida “Red Rabbit” as she remembers Frida from being on the island previously. Back then, Frida had red rabbit nail art, a detail which the housekeeper remembered her by.
What’s in the red bags?
Slater said “Forgetting is a gift”. He meant it both metaphorically and literally. The Desideria perfume was distributed to men, in red bags. Meaning there were more perpetrators and victims.
Why’d they kill Jess?
Jess was bitten by a venomous snake. The venom counteracts the amnesiac perfume, working as an antidote. This meant that Jess remembered all the abuse, and Slater had to kill her.
How did Frida get Slater to forget?
She filled his vape pen with Desideria perfume.
What’s with the lipgloss?
Frida finds a red lipgloss in the bathroom drawer. She opens it to find its all old and sticky. We learn that the lipgloss belonged to her, she used it when she had been on the island before, but recalled none of it.
Who were the girls?
We’re given the impression that everyone knows everyone. Later on, we find out that none of the girls knew each other before the island. And that they all were lured to the island, with people they don’t know.
Why was Frida so attracted to Slater?
In the beginning we see Frida’s intense fixation on Slater. She’s fascinated by him and curious. Much like Frida, the audience is curious about her curiosity. Frida is experiencing a trauma bond. Frida had been on the island before, meaning she had been abused by Slater. Something known as victims bonding with perpetrators, you can google it, it’s called trauma bonding. Even though Frida doesn’t recall anything, her body and mind are naturally gravitational to Slater, because of the previous trauma. It’s masked as attraction and curiosity when in reality it’s a traumatic bond.
I’d give Blink Twice a solid 9/10, for its raw authenticity and that beautiful twisted ending none of us ever expected. For those who haven’t watched it, I highly recommend. For those who have, would be great to hear your theories and or questions. Oh..and major spoiler alert oops.
